For centuries, seaweed has been valued in Asian countries for its nutritional and medicinal qualities. Western cultures have now embraced it for its many health benefits, particularly its ability to cleanse or detoxify the body. The most common type of seaweed is the Brown algae, or kelp. It is believed to rid the body of toxins and heavy metals that cause a variety of health issues such as obesity, arthritis and high blood pressure. Seaweed is rich in minerals such as iodine and potassium. It is also believed to boost the body’s natural immune system, and improve thyroid and liver function which also helps with detoxification. Body wraps, baths, seaweed foods and diet supplements are common methods used to detoxify with seaweed.
